Under the perfect cone of Arenal Volcano, this is Costa Rica’s adventure capital. Must-dos: the Mistico Hanging Bridges through the canopy, an Arenal Volcano hike over old lava fields, evenings in the natural hot springs, white-water rafting, ziplining, the thundering La Fortuna Waterfall, and a day trip to the electric-blue Río Celeste in Tenorio National Park.
A winding drive up into the clouds. Must-dos: a night jungle tour for sloths, frogs and snakes; ziplining and hanging bridges above the canopy; the trails of the Monteverde & Santa Elena reserves; and a coffee & chocolate tour to see how it’s all made.
Down to the Gold Coast and the lively beach town of Tamarindo. Must-dos: surf lessons on the beginner-friendly beach break, a sunset catamaran cruise, beach-club days and nightlife, and day trips to Playa Grande (Las Baulas turtle park) or the ‘Little Hawaii’ waves of Playa Avellanas.
An easy hour north to the quieter Playa Flamingo and the crushed-shell sands of Playa Conchal. Must-dos: snorkelling and paddleboarding the calm bays, a beach-club and spa day, and a final sunset dinner over the Pacific before the short drive back to Liberia.
